Shane Jacobson Appointed CEO of the American Cancer Society

23 July 2025
The American Cancer Society (ACS) and its advocacy arm, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), have appointed Shane Jacobson as their new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 12, 2025. Jacobson will succeed Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, who has served as interim CEO since November 2024.
This leadership transition marks a pivotal moment for ACS as the organization continues to scale its efforts in cancer research, policy advocacy, and patient support. Jacobson, a respected figure in nonprofit healthcare leadership, currently leads the V Foundation for Cancer Research, where his nearly five-year tenure yielded transformative results—revenue increased by 190%, while grantmaking surged by 275%.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Shane Jacobson to the next chapter of the American Cancer Society," said Terri McClements, chair of the American Cancer Society board of directors. “He is a bold, mission-driven leader with integrity and the proven ability to align purpose with performance. His leadership, passion, and deep belief in the urgency of our work will make a difference in countless lives. With him at the helm—we are poised for even greater impact in the fight against cancer.”
Jacobson’s tenure at the V Foundation was marked by a strategic shift toward high-impact, equity-focused cancer research. He played a central role in forging the Foundation’s largest philanthropic partnerships and championed initiatives targeting health disparities, early-stage innovation, and reinvestment in breakthrough science. Prior to his role at the V Foundation, Jacobson served as President and CEO of the University of Vermont Foundation.
In his new position at ACS, Jacobson will lead both the Society and ACS CAN. His priorities include expanding stakeholder engagement, enhancing fundraising capacity to maximize mission delivery, and working with board and staff to craft a long-term strategic plan.
"The burden of cancer is unacceptably high, and the American Cancer Society is uniquely positioned to tackle this challenge. It is a special opportunity to lead an organization with such an impressive history and powerful mission," said Jacobson. “I look forward to working with the exceptional ACS team and national volunteer network, building on their many successes to boldly shape the future of ending cancer as we know it, for everyone.”
Jacobson brings to the role more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience, underpinned by a deep commitment to equitable cancer care. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University and completed the Harvard University Management Development Program.
Founded over 110 years ago, the American Cancer Society is the only national organization addressing cancer across the full spectrum—from advocacy and research to patient and caregiver support. With Jacobson at the helm, the Society is expected to deepen its commitment to scientific innovation and policy reform, with a renewed focus on access, equity, and measurable outcomes.
